Professor Whiteford is the Kratzmann Professor of Psychiatry and Population Health and Director of the Mental Health Policy and Evaluation Group at the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research in the School of Population Health, University of Queensland. Professor Whiteford has held senior clinical and administrative positions in Australia, including those of Director of Psychiatric Services and Director of Mental Health in the Queensland Department of Health and Director of Mental Health in the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care. He worked for ten years on the design and implementation of Australia’s Mental Health Strategy and was Chairman of the Working Group which oversaw this initiative. In 1999 he was appointed to the first mental health position at the World Bank in Washington DC with the task of developing the Bank’s capacity to respond to the rising global burden of mental disorders. Professor Whiteford chaired the Mental Disorders Expert Group for the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study and has advised the OECD on their mental health and work initiative and the government of Hong Kong on their mental health plan.
